Two years ago, I started painting. Having previously worked in Education, Glass Design and photography. I wanted to paint the way I made glass: with lots of colours and with a reflective quality.
I use two painting styles, one using palette knives layering the oil paint in big slabs and the other using acrylic, gently blending the colours using brushes. Due to the weather in Wales being what it is, it usually takes several months for the thick slabs of oil paint to dry. The acrylic paint tends to dry much quicker. These two styles and my previous works can be viewed at:
I like approaching each landscape and portrait completely fresh and let the ambience decide the paintings evolution. I am really pleased that I never went to art college to learn to paint and that as such, my own work is entirely what I want it to be. I am also quite proud that my parents took me to art galleries when very young to be influenced by modern British sculpture and paintings and they have all undoubtedly influenced my development.
As one “great painter”, Francis Bacon said: “I’m not a great painter, but I paint the way I want, by chance”. I do hope to create work that will at least catch people’s attention much like a photograph or video would. Hopefully in an age when images can be made on computers, something of an individual’s sense of self, remains in the use of real paint by the untrained hand.
In the last two years I have created about 65 paintings and it has been a fantastic experience. I really enjoy starting with an idea or a view of something and just start applying paint to the canvas and seeing what happens. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I wish I could give up my day job and paint all day, every day.
